SIS Sachs Lebre

This is the first moped of SIS Sachs, the company set up by Organização Sachs Portugal, the importer of Sachs mopeds, when it decided in the early sixties to start manufacturing mopeds in Portugal. It was launched in 1964 as a relatively cheap and resistent bike for working class people. The original Lebre (wild rabbit in Portuguese) had a Sachs turbine three speed gearbox and lasted some three years. It is easily recognizable by the large rabbit sign in both sides of the tank, together with other specific characteristics. The second version, with a three or four speed gearbox, had some improvements (particularly in the mudguards) as well as slightly different painting patterns. It is recognizable by the smaller rabbit drawing in the tank. It was produced from 1967 well into the early 70s. Further to this there was a third and final version of the Lebre, produced until the late 70s. The engine was the same four speed gearbox of the second version but the tank and the side tool boxes were less round, and the colour patterns were very different. Together with the unique rabbit logo, the red, gold and whitish colours of the two earlier versions were gone and instead, SIS Sachs painted the tank and the tool boxes with dark blue and white horizontal stripes. The tank had the words "SIS Sachs" written on it and the tool boxes the word "Lebre" . Over 90% of the Lebres produced went to the Portuguese market but a few thousand were exported, namely to the Uk, Greece, Angola, and possibly northern African countries too.
